Rendering services on contract basis, in any field is named as free lance. This term was introduced by the famous novelist Sir. Walter Scott (1771-1832) in his notorious "IVENHO", wherein the Hero, by his sculpted character as "medieval mercenary warrior" served as non-sworn to any lord's or Duke's services. This kind of service in any field is named after ‘Freelancing’. The word 'Freelance' was recognized as a Noun, a Verb in 1903 by the authorities such as the Oxford English Dictionary.

In the olden days these kinds of services were rented by required personals, apart from regular employees. A freelancer, freelance worker, or freelance is somebody who is self-employed and is not committed to a particular employer for a long term. 'Independent contractor" would be the term used in a higher register of English. Nowadays, the Internet has opened up many freelance opportunities. Offshore outsourcing, online outsourcing and crowd sourcing are heavily reliant on the Internet to provide economical access to remote workers, and frequently leverage technology to manage work flow to and from the employer.

As a result, freelance employment has been common in the areas of writing, editing, translation, indexing, software development, website design, advertising, open innovations, information technology and business process outsourcing. Since 1980, we found more opportunity of freelancing in the publishing industry. The freelance writings,

copy editing and proofreading were being outsourced. In writing and other artistic fields, "freelance" and its derivative terms are often reserved for workers who create works on their own initiative, then look for someone to publish them.
